My very first true graphics card was a Radeon rage 128 with like 8 or 16mb video ram. I have gone through many Radeon cards and for 180$ this is one hell of a card. Lets face it not many, if none games today support direct x 11 however my nvidia 9800gt did not support my Panasonic resoultion which was because my 9800GT didn’t have a HDMI output connector. The fact is when I grew tired of the Radeon 5850 being out of stock I bought this card and so far hooked to a Panasonic 46″ plasma it has performed outstandingly. If you want maximum performance wait for the 5850 for 5870 but the fact remains 180$ for a graphics card with direct 11 and capable of running L4D at full 1920X1080 resoultion is remarkable. This card almost didn’t fit into my NZXT cases so be prepares it requires some room, for this price this card is outstanding and its in stock woot
. I am not a nerd nor going to give anyone a pros or cons verdict. Fact is I’am a gamer so for 180$ this is a great deal and lets face it ladies and gentle men why should anyone pay more than 200$ for a graphics when it will be outdated within a year? Too many manufactures are looking for profit with no gain to consumer experience, all I have to say is watch what you spend and remember corruptions are looking out for any amount of money they can acquire, was this card worth the 180$? So far yes but beyond 200$ is insane especially considering a x-box is 200$

Setting up
The card is huge, taking up the space of two slots (which is to be expected of current cards) but also being long. I found that it fitted nicely in my Full tower case, though one should detemine the size of their case before buying the X2. In my opinion, if you are buying the 4870 X2, you should get a full tower anyway, as the cooling requirements must be considered as well. The card requires two PCI-E power connections- so be sure that your Power Supply is ‘compatible’ with the X2. The card uses the PCI-E 2.0 interface, which boasts higher bandwith, among other features- so be sure that you get a suitable motherboard aswell. Driver installation is easy- drivers are provided on-disk, though the latest online drivers are optimal.
Performance
In-game, the 4870 x2 performs very well- always being not far behind the GTX 295 (which is £100 dearer), and in certain games, it will beat the 295, namely games such as GRID and Fallout 3. At the highest resolutions, the X2 will get a high fps in most games. The difference between the 295 and the X2 is often a matter of a couple of frames per second. On the more demanding games, I used ATi Catalyst Control Centre to increase the fan speeds, as ATi are infamous for the heat that their cards can reach.
Conclusion
The 4870 X2 is indeed an excellent card. It beats the ‘DX11-capable’ 5870, in terms of power and price, and rivals the GTX 295 in terms of performance, for £100 less. In terms of Direct X 11, the fact that the 4870 X2 isn’t capable of the full benefits of DX11 wouldn’t drive me to buy a HD 5800 series card, as DX11 wouldn’t be integrated into games for some time, and by that time, neither the 4870 X2, or the 5870 would be the powerhouses that they are right now.
Therefore, out of the Nvidia GTX 295, the ATi HD 4870 X2 and the HD 5870, I would definitely go for the 4870 X2. HOWEVER, the 4870 X2 needs to be used at higher resolutions on a decent sized monitor. For resolutions below 1680 x 1080, you would be better off going for a Nvidia GTX 260, or an ATi HD 4870.

Insanely fast, overclocking “out-of-the-box” is ok, goes to 900/1250.
After applying ASUS Bios and using MSI Afterburner, can get the GPU all the way to 1100-1200Mhz stable (can go to 1400 but good luck trying it), however no luck with the memory going over 1250.
Pros:
- Fastest video card on the market, can run anything with full details on my 24″ at 1920×1200
- Can use an MCW-60 to watercool it (uses standard Ati holes/plate) and go to even higher clocks with low noise
- Looks great on the case, a big card with a nice design on it (other brands place a girl/axe/other stuff on the side of the card that IMO looks ugly)
- Ati has the only DX11 cards on the market right now
- Display Port finally!
- Eyefinity with 3 monitors

Cons:
- A bit more overclockability from the memory will be nice.
- Over 1000Mhz the standard hsf can become noisy
- Eyefinity with 3 monitors (a con since it makes me think to buy 2 more monitors…

The sequence of launches implemented by AMD over the past 2 months is somewhat impressive. On 23 September was debut day for the two Radeon HD 5870 and Radeon HD 5850, proposed top of the range with a single GPU architecture with support for DirectX 11 API. On 13 October it was the turn of the solutions Radeon HD 5770 and Radeon HD 5750 cards, which include the architectural features of the two proposals Radeon HD 5800 with appropriate simplifications leading to a contained cost.
Thursday 18 November, when the card is the Radeon HD 5970, proposed new summit in the panorama of ATI graphics cards supporting DirectX 11, which incorporates an approach popularized by AMD with the symbol X2: The GPU on the same pair two PCB, exploiting the benefits of this technology CrossFireX. The Radeon HD 5970 keeps overall value laden peak lower than the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 295, with an idle power far more content for the entire system with respect to the proposed dual GPU rival.
During this test we had, again, all values of the cards in noise test: for this reason, the new values may be different from those proposed in previous tests. Overclocking and operating temperatures

Direct performance comparison between the Radeon HD 5970 and Radeon HD 5870, Radeon HD 4870 X2 and GeForce GTX 295 shows a clear potential advantage for the newcomer, even more evident with increasing resolution up to 2560×1600 pixels. DThere are two implications of this: the price is anything but popular, and very limited availability.
